What structured cabling actually is
Structured cabling means the data cabling in a building is laid
out to a plan instead of grown one cable at a time. Each outlet gets its own cable,
run back to one central point, and everything is labelled so a link can be traced
in seconds rather than by pulling ceiling tiles. We install
Cat 5e and Cat 6 structured cabling.
The point is not tidiness for its own sake. It is that in five years, when
somebody moves a desk or adds a printer, the change is a short job rather than a
contractor and a fortnight.
Structured cabling is
A planned system: one Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable per outlet, run back to a central
point, labelled, and set out so the building can be changed later without
starting again.
Structured cabling is not
A run of cable to wherever the router happens to be, extended each time
somebody needs another point. That is how buildings end up with no idea what
plugs into what.
The words on your quote
These are the terms that come up on almost every commercial electrical quote.
- Containment
- The metalwork the cables live in. Cable tray,
basket, trunking and conduit. It gets planned first because everything else
follows the route it takes.
- First fix
- Everything hidden. Containment, cables pulled,
back boxes set — done while the ceilings and walls are still open.
- Second fix
- Everything you can see. Sockets, switches,
light fittings, boards and outlets, fitted once the building is decorated.
- Distribution board
- The board the circuits come off. The
commercial version of a consumer unit, with the protective devices for each
circuit and a schedule saying what is what.
- Consumer unit
- The board in a house. What most people still
call the fuse board. A modern one adds RCD protection an older installation was
never given.
- Cat 5e / Cat 6
- Data cable grades. Cat 5e still does the job
on plenty of installations; Cat 6 is the usual choice on a new fit-out and
the one we would normally put in.
- Lighting controls
- What decides when lights are on.
Presence detection, daylight dimming, timed zones — usually the cheapest
energy saving available in an existing building.
- Lux level
- How much light lands on the work. An office desk
and a warehouse aisle need very different figures, which is why the design comes
before the fittings.
Lighting design, in plain terms
Designing a lighting scheme means working out how much light has to land where
people actually work, then choosing fittings that deliver it without glare,
without dark patches, and without costing a fortune to run. In a warehouse that is
about aisle uniformity and mounting height. In an office it is about screens and
glare. At home it is usually about layers — general light, task light and
something on a dimmer for the evening.
Get it right and the electricity bill falls at the same time as the space becomes
easier to work in. That is normally where an energy-efficient re-light pays for
itself.

What you get at the end
New installations and alterations are certified. You receive an
Electrical Installation Certificate for a new installation or a
substantial alteration, or a Minor Works Certificate for
something smaller, plus the O&M information for what we fitted. Keep them:
they are what an insurer, a landlord, a solicitor or the next contractor will ask
for. Ongoing testing after that is
maintenance
and compliance work.
